Delegating Resource Allocation: Multidimensional Information vs. Decisions
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper studies the problem of how to delegate the allocation of finite resources across multiple categories to an agent who has better information on their benefits. It focuses on a tractable, natural class of delegation policies that impose a floor or cap on the allocation to each category, a generalization of Holmström’s (1977) “interval controls” to multidimensional settings. The paper characterizes the optimal policies and shows that they can impose distorting limits on categories which cause no conflict of interest with the agent, so as to curb how the conflict in other categories affects his overall allocation. Such limits are more likely to be optimal when the conflict is weaker and the agent also has specific information on categories causing no conflict. These solutions to the trade-off between rules and discretion differ substantively from those in settings with unidimensional decisions or information. The paper discusses applications to delegation within firms, the design of fiscal constitutions and policies, and individual commitment problems. JEL CLASSIFICATION: D23, D82, D86, D91, E62, G31

What Factors Do Allied Health Take Into Account When Making Resource Allocation Decisions?
Background Allied health comprises multiple professional groups including dietetics, medical radiation practitioners, occupational therapists, optometrists and psychologists. Different to medical and nursing, Allied health are often organized in discipline specific departments and allocate budgets within these to provide services to a range of clinical areas. Little is known of how managers of ...
متن کاملDSS Effectiveness in Marketing Resource Allocation Decisions: Reality vs. Perception
W study the process by which model-based decision support systems (DSSs) influence managerial decision making in the context of marketing budgeting and resource allocation. We focus on identifying whether and how DSSs influence the decision process (e.g., cognitive effort deployed, discussion quality, and decision alternatives considered) and, as a result, how these DSSs influence decision outc...

Cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA), as a system of allocative efficiency for global health programs, is an influential criterion for resource allocation in the context of diplomacy and inherent foreign policy decisions therein. This is because such programs have diplomatic benefits and costs that can be uploaded from the recipient and affect the broader foreign policy interests of the donor and ...
متن کاملPrice Delegation in Sales Organizations: An Empirical Investigation
The allocation of decision rights is an integral component of designing organizational architecture. Economists have long understood the importance of co-locating decision rights with the knowledge that is valuable to those decisions. Following this prescription, marketing scholars have developed strong theoretical arguments in favor of delegating pricing authority to the sales force. Empirical...
متن کاملOn Hochbaum’s Scaling Algorithm for the General Resource Allocation Problem
We point out that the polynomial-time scaling algorithm by Hochbaum (1994) does not work correctly for the general resource allocation problem. We discuss the reason for the failure by certain examples, and modify the algorithm so that it works correctly.
